The refugees from Louisiana and Mississippi cannot all fit in the Astrodome -- nor should they have to. If you have a spare room, please consider donating your space to a person or family in need. It's the right thing to do, and you'll be helping not just an individual, but your country. There are two web resources you should be aware of:
The Katrina Home Sharing Registry allows providers of living-space to register and match up with refugees. The NOLA.com Homes Available Board is a bit more ad hoc, but serves its purpose equally well.
New Orleans alone will be uninhabitable for months. If you can give someone a place to stay, to find work, and to get on his or her feet in the short run, please do so. It is not just charity, but duty: and the two are not exclusive.

But we got to get the information in, and into one place.
I sound like a spammer, but it's not spam. The sooner we get names into tables, the easier it's going to be to find people.

You need to give high priority placement to these links to available free housing. There are homes available all over the country.
The New Orleans airport is now open, and airlines are flying in supplies and flying out evacuees. Mostly they are flying them out into Texas.
If we contact them, I am sure that these same airlines would give free stand-by transportation to evacuees headed to free housing. This will help to relieve the crush in the nearby cities, and help to make the urgency of this disaster felt nationally.
