Going After Zell

Zell Miller does not get talked about much now that he is out of office. The Democrat who turned out to be a vocal Bush supporter and who gave a stinging rebuke to his own party has a new book out.
If you remember, Zell had a famous argument with Chris Matthews during the Republican National Convention. Unbeknownst to many, Zell says Chris Matthews called the senator a "seggy," meaning a segregationist, before the interview. That's what got Zell fired up.
Tonight, Chris Matthews is at it again. He's running clips of Zell in response to Zell's book. RedState is pleased to release for public consumption a letter from Dr. Cecil Staton, Zell's publisher and a client of mine, that has been sent to MSNBC and Chris Matthews.
This is well worth reading on . . .
Mr. Chris Matthews
Host
MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews
400 North Capitol Street, Suite 850
Washington, DC 20001Dear Chris,
We understand that you will be airing tonight on Hardball, the famous segment from the Republican National Convention in which former Senator Zell Miller challenged you to a duel. It was a dramatic moment in television and we're so pleased that you have been able to use the segment as a promo to boost the show's ratings for the last 9 months.
We are even more pleased that you will be playing it again tonight as it will be a great publicity hit for Senator Miller's new book A Deficit of Decency.
The only question is, in Senator Miller's absence tonight will you
tell the whole story as to why he was angry with your comments? In chapter 6 (Hardball Huff) of A Deficit of Decency, Zell explains that the reason he challenged you is that before he came on the set you claimed he was an "old time seggy."Will you renounce your baseless claim that Senator Miller is a
segregationist? As you may know, following Senator Miller's challenge, CNBC took an online poll in which they asked who would win the duel. You, of course, received 14% of the vote while Senator Miller garnered 86%.
We wonder if that will be part of the discussion tonight.
Sincerely,
Cecil Staton
President
Stroud & Hall Publishers
Tune in tonight to see what Chris says. While he intends to rerun the Zell clip in response to Zell's book being published, will Chris confirm or deny that he called Zell Miller a segregationist.
If this will aid in setting up another Zell v. Chris match, publication of the letter is truly a worthy goal in the public interest. Regardless, with Chris bringing up old history in response to Zell's book, it will be interesting to see Chris's explanation.
Disclosure: I have done legal work for Stroud & Hall and I've also blogged for MSNBC, including covering the 2004 election for the Hardblogger site. Just figured I'd put that on the table.

. . .it would be a draw, as puncturing a giant gasbag with hot lead is an excellent way to create a massive explosion that would undoubtedly take out Senator Miller, the seconds, and the camera crew hired to immortalize the event.
The why is because Chris is intent on reairing the segment tonight in response to Zell's new book. So, it will be interesting to see if Chris mentioned why Zell was heated.
If you're going to offer something like that, I think the audience at least deserves an explanation.
Personally I would pay to see a duel between Zell Miller and Chris Mathews using spit balls as the weapon of choice.
...so long as two consenting adults make legal arrangements before hand i.e. state openly and freely they know what they are getting into. Let them do as they wish, I say. Hell, there are a few despicable characters whom I would not mind going up against myself.
No doubt, Zell would win that fight hands down. Chris probably does not even know how to handle a firearm. We could make it fairer by having them use blades, but there might now be much left of Matthews.
considering that Matthews would probably wet his pants and scream like a girl if he saw a gun.

I know he's a client and all, but I remember the the show quite clearly and Zell's "seggy" excuse smacks too much of Johnny-too-late. The exchange was extensively covered in the media and the blogosphere; why is it only being mentioned now?
Incidentally, I'm pretty sure Zell would win a duel with Matthews as well -- though I'm not sure if "dueling" is a skill that's all that relevant in this day and age.
