Blogger reaction roundup to FEC gauntlet

By krempasky Posted in Comments (9) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

I wrote earlier that FEC might be about to throw the gauntlet down in front of bloggers. Here are some blogger reactions.

From the right:

  • Polipundit
  • Claybourn
  • Rexblog
  • Jiblog (yes, I agree. McCain stinks. But keep in mind that McCain-Feingold specifically did NOT mention the internet in categories of regulated activity)
  • Outside the Beltway (calls it 'chilling', and hopes that this will seen as a bipartisan issue. Also shows no love for McCain-Feingold.)
  • Pajama Hadin (Brings up Leahy's bill)
  • Grand Dame Michelle Malkin weighs in, with sporadic commentary, but cueing in on the point with her last blockquote.
  • Protein Wisdom (The CITIZEN JOURNALIST is Not Amused).

  • From the left:

  • MyDD (who correctly identifies the problem)

  • BOPNews (huh? Jeff Gannon?)
  • Daily Kos (front page, and brings up the danger this poses to the blogosphere as a whole)
  • Eschaton (Ok with some regulation, just not this much)

    MyDD by Adam C

May I be the first to give major kudos to MyDD for correctly identifying the problem and calling for a solution.  His credibility just rose substantially in my book.

Left and Right by Adam C

Glad to see both left and right bloggers concurring that this law has to go.  However, it is somewhat ironic to see judicial activism (this was a Clinton appointee ruling) interpreting a anti-speech law (BCRA) that was pushed by Democrats and McCain (and me FWIW) come back to bite liberal bloggers (and conservative ones of course).

I guess the law of unintended consequences gains another group of supporters today.  Speaking of, I still believe the law of unintended consequences is probably the most valuable conservative idea to break into the mainstream.

Do you have your reasons for supporting McCain Feingold blogged anywhere?

Is there such a thing as "blogizdat"? I wonder how that would work?

It looks like you've changed your mind, but if not I'd be happy to debate it anytime.

I was aimlessly wandering around the blogosphere today, when I stumbled upon the now notorious FEC story. It disturbed me, so I made the rounds ... Instapundit, Malkin, Capt Ed., Red State.

Finally, I checked Daily Kos to see the reaction of the Kossacks. Unsurprisingly, many commenters approached this important free speech issue as yet another way to accuse Rove/Bush/Gannon of some grandiose conspiracy. The conversation was profane, childish, and boring. But, then a few even tempered voices began to make coherent points about McCain-Feingold and that a shared value was at stake, free speech. These new posters were polite, respectful and made sense.

Turns out the posters were some of my favorite bloggers from Red State. That was a fine bit of lion taming, guys. I appreciate the way you stood up for rational discussion and civility.

                                                                      Keep it up!

    No, thank you by krempasky

You're too kind. Very, very glad we could be of a tiny service - considering the debt we owe your service. Stay safe.

    Thank you. by Adam C

Echoing Krempasky... thank you for your service to our country.  Our dallies in the blogosphere pale in comparison.
