Today's discussion: your guilty web pleasure. We all read blogs, we all read news sites. But what do you read - even obsess over - that we don't know about?

Mine? Television Without Pity. As I explained to some friends last night - I still don't remember the name of the homely CTU analyst in the last two seasons of 24, but just because I can only think of her as "Potato Face".

little web pleasure is Post Secret.  People send in postcards with their deepest or funniest secrets.  They post a bunch of new ones every Sunday, and every Sunday I'm there.

To take a break from the daily grind of politics, I enjoy the Superficial
...even if it is a bit sketchy from time to time.

Man, talk about a site that can throw a serious emotional right hook.

Go Fug Yourself by abroth

Without a doubt, Go Fug Yourself, is one of the funniest blogs out there.  It confirms what we already know, too.  That the IQ level in Hollywood is inversely proportional to the egos.

Somebody's clearly by E Pluribus Unum

hard at it this morning....

Mine's Box Office Mojo.   Nothing special, just a complete compendium of movie attendance numbers, both useful and nutty.  Current releases, including daily takes, how many theaters a movie is showing in, domestic and foreign receipts.  The fun stuff is the all time numbers, including domestic, total, the very useful 'adjusted for inflation' -- where you can get a fair comparison (GWTW smokes everybody, including Star Wars and Titanic).  My favorite wacky one is 'Top Grossing Movies That Never Hit #1'.

Sketch? A bit. More like watching a trainwreck...

haha by Ender

I do the same thing :) Actually it is sad. I can't believe the democrat propaganda campaign has succeeded to such a degree.

so true by Syndicate

but with any good trainwreck, you cannot avert your eyes.

Whedon.info.  News aggregator and photos for the Buffyverse and such.

The sad thing is by Dan McLaughlin

The Fug site details how little people in Hollywood know about fashion, which is supposed to be one of the two or three things that are actually part of the job of being a movie star.

It used to be... by rabidf16

What kept me going in 2004 was Jay Cost's Horserace Blog.  Because of him, we knew Ohio was in the bag by about midnight.

I hope he comes back for 2006 (he told me he might)

Where are you Jay?  Haven't seen you post here in a while.

WhatifSports.com by Dan McLaughlin

Oh, it's addictive.  Bill Simmons got me hooked on it.

Alaska's Coolest Paintball Webcomic!

Confusing the hell out of nonplayers every Monday, Wednesday and Friday since 2002

I jones if I don't have my thrice weekly hit.

And I'm sure someone will have to mention Sluggy Freelance. I've read a few, but I'm afraid to go their regularly because I'm afraid I'll get hopelessly obsessed.

Of course, I first learned about Bun Bun (http://library.beau.org/lib/ebooks/baen/04/Sluggy/) from reading John Ringo's books (http://www.johnringo.com/), but that's an entirely different story, so to speak.  His books aren't a guilty web pleasure, but they are a guilty pleasures (and politically incorrect, on so many levels).

Sluggy by Crusader Corim

How can someone not mention Sluggy Freelance?  Greatest webcomic online right now.  I absolutely love it.

Oh, and agreed about TWOP too.  I never miss a Smallville review, and yes, I remember characters by their TWOP references.

Well...now that this is an open thread, I'd thought to make a small observation...nothing really important but...

I think Chloe is hot and I have a strong feeling that Edgar and Chloe could be an item this coming fifth season!  I've always thought Edgar to be a cool character, a real fat guy making heroic actions!

Wait a minute, I think I got that wrong...oops, I keep confusing those guys, Jack and Edgar!  Hehe...

Okay...just kidding...don't throw eggs on me!

Besides, what do you think I should do...

1.) renting War of Worlds movie?

2.) finding a nice book on John Tyler, the first vice president to take over the office?

3.) saving my money and wait for the fourth season of "24" to be released one week before my birthday?

So many choices....

Dan

a lingering, morbid interest perhaps.  Obsidian wings.  Did war there for three months, me against the mongolian hordes,or is it mongoloid?  Committed the cardinal sin and forgot that in some circles a conservatives role in life is to be a pin cushion for insults and insulted back in return.  I know you don't believe the latter part of that sentence.  I still return once in a while to see how bad it is, you know Fitzgerald is Aristotle/St Francis of Assisi, Ken Starr is Mortimer Snerd/Jack the Ripper.   I'd like to compare my occasional visits to a doctor  taking the pulse of a patient dying of a rare disease.

While our opposite numbers on the other side of the aisle were rejoicing at the 1 in 3 polls that had Kerry ahead, I was watching Rasmussen throughout the 2004 campaign, and had cautious optimism (that turned out to be well-placed) as to the outcome.

But a day without new content at Iowahawk and Wuzzadem is like a day without light. My favorites: Iowahawk's Zarqawi blog entries (and trust me, you will ROTF and LYAO) here and here, and Wuzzadem's Fox Reporters Have More Fun.

As far as politics goes, I read Neal Boortz's Nealz Nuze every weekday morning, and usually read all the articles he links to as well.  Usually about 1/3rd to 1/4th come from townhall.com.

Outside of politics, my guilty time-wasting pleasure is the computer game nethack.  To heck with graphics, a 24x80 text window still provides the most engaging game ever written.  I've been playing since v2.2 back in 1988, and each new version gets bigger and better.  Lately I've been playing on alt.org's nethack server (telnet nethack.alt.org), even though I know I will never ever ever get anywhere on their scoreboard (2000th place is 400+K points).

Two guilty pleasures by Steve Foley

Are Etemenanki you should read some of the stuff on this site, my man is out there! And the the Onion can't seem to pull myself away from this one!

Have you been to wunderground.com?  $5 gets you no ads there for a full year, it's the best bargain on the net.  (I have no connection to them except as a happy customer; heck I used to work for their competition, weather.com.)

Mr. Sun by Allison Hayward

Mr. Sun is the only guilty Web pleasure I'll admit to in front of You All.  Mike may appreciate the "Walk the Line" posts - scroll down a little.

Happy Thanksgiving, all.

I'm always checking the weather around my region, and like weatherunderground also.

The other guilty pleasure is tech sites, but don't ask me why.  I'm not particularly tech proficient, and have more than I can handle with two computers I work with from home, but I love all that stuff.

This I will have someday.

Ringo's alright by ConservativeMutant

but I'll take my David Drake first, thanks. I'm afraid I dropped Sluggy a while ago after the convolutions of the storyline got too complex for me to follow.

Since you mention The Whiteboard, look closely.

Real Life Comics by jmsierra

My daily guilty web pleasure is http://www.reallifecomics.com. He is funny, rarely goes into politics, and stays mostly clean. The kid is talented, and writes well. He has a way of making every day situations light, and does it at his own expense.

I think it's one of the best lite-subject web comics out there.

Don't know what it is. by Mark Kilmer

Several times a week, I find myself reading the New York Yankees Forum a NJ.com.  I say "find myself," because I do not make a conscious decision to clock on the bookmark and visit the site.  It's: there I am.

I often look for new stations at SHOUTcast.com, as well.  You know, see if they've upped this kps on Otto's Baroque or something.

Obsessions by Darin H

First obsession is World of Warcraft

I can't miss Peter King's MMQB and will read the Denver Post online as well. And talking smack with my friends about the NFL (a couple are diehard Niner's fans, hahahah). Go Broncos!

I read some stock blogs, but usually I enjoy the commentary on Fool.com the best.

The TV Show LOST (my wife just bought me season 1 for my birthday yesterday)

Must say... by BlackRepub

Depending on the time of year...chicagobears.com, cubs.com, whitesox.com, bulls.com, can't get started without my fix of chicago sports. Got 1 World Series, looking towards the Super Bowl! I just had to point out the World Series win especially to the Yankees fan....curse of Rivera maybe? I'm sorry I had to-just have no respect for anything that comes out of the Northeast, especially Yankees or Red Sox...

I'm the Yankees fan, and your White Sox were a thing of beauty all year, except for a few weeks near the end of the regular season.

Gofugyourself, for sure. Other than that, I read all the gossip and advice columns on the left bar of my Hotmail account. They get me every time. And finally, I still check in on NC high school football at NCrivals.com and RichmondRaiders.com.

We obsessions by casualobservervations

Seeing how most my life is at a computer, I have my web obsessions down.

Currently, I have to have a dose of www.waiting4oblivion.com.  Oblivion is the latest in a series of games I really enjoy.  It was supposed to launch with the xbox 360, but was puched back indefinitely.  waiting4oblivion tries to get the best scoop on when the game will be ready.

But the best reads of the day are Slashdot, The Daily Show, and Dilbert

Civilization Four is beautiful. :)

Until you already have a stockpile of nukes. They can ban you from developing nuclear weapons and you can't even cheat. How unrealistic is that? They really need to add a "I'll do it when the blue helmets force me to do it" option.

Civ IV by Patricia75

I'm afraid my husband (of one month) will get around to upgrading his computer.  If he does, it will be to start playing Civ IV, and I may never see him again!

And you're both right.

Yeah, go figure by Thomas

After the Baldur's Gate games, Neverwinter was a disappointment ... at first. Then, like an evil fungus, it grows on you.

If only it weren't so heavily scripted. That was really the #1 problem with NWN.

I guess the magic is over.  :)

True by Thomas

But the editor ... oh, man. Yeah, there are some cruddy limits built in, and you're stuck with the horrible d20 rules, which means you lose a lot of the internal beauty of, say, Baldur's Gate II, but what you can do with the editor ... priceless.

I admittedly wasn't happy with how the whole Aribeth thing turned out. Steamed, actually.

Every Thursday... by Patricia75

...I have to stop by www.anncoulter.com to read her latest column.  I know she is not a favorite here, but my dark side has a soft spot for invective.  I sometimes stop by on days other than Thursday to see if there are new quotes from "Chairman Ann."  I get so excited when I see she's going to be on Hannity and Colmes, because watching her make snarky remarks to Susan "The Case for Hillary Clinton" Estrich always makes me giggle!

Ahh, yes by zuiko

I had forgotten about the editor. There were some impressive 3rd party modules created. I might have to reload that some time.

That's funny. by Patricia75

I'm going to have to make sure I'm not scrambling for a last-minute Christmas gift for him.  Otherwise, we may have to move the computer to the living room so I can at least remain acquainted with the back of his head. :)

Try Sid's Pirates by Carlos

Its one of the few games I obsessed on for more than two days that my wife semi-approved of.  Mainly because the kids can watch you rule the Caribbean, in pg comfort, and during that time she catches up on Victorian Literature.  Of course I pay the price later, in prolonged discussions of why Collins narrative ranged more freely than Dickens, or some other obscure topic.

Every Thursday by johnt

I'm at the same place you are.  Forget about your dark side and concentrate on the dark side Ann lampoons and ridicules.  Remember, there are people in Congress who say and do worse and they hold office.  We needn't even touch upon the bloggers.  Enjoy.

It is a bit unnerving rooting for your favorite contract at intrade.  I haven't decided whether its a guilty pleasure or not.  I don't personally support gambling, but do hold stocks.  I am against the whole culture of casinos, but tournament poker is pretty close to a sport.  Where does that leave intrade?  I haven't bought a position, but capitalizing on your conservatism sounds like a good thing...  I'll go hide under my sackcloth now, anyone have some extra ashes?

Me too! by katcdw

I don't take Ann too seriously (which I think is the key). More often than not I find her quite funny.

...stock options! ;-)

Very funny political podcast from Australia, also covers England and the U.S. It comes out on Saturdays.

I guess I'm the only one who hated Chloe Sullivan for 4 of Smallville's 5 seasons...  ;)

P.S. So, who dies in the 100th episode? Smart money's on Chloe, but I think it could be Lana...

another guilty pleasuer is... Family Guy

Oh I dig LL too by E Pluribus Unum

I'm just an all-purpose Smallville lech.

But no, they can't kill Lana.  AFAIKT, they are still sticking (very, very broadly) to comic-book lore, and Lana is known to have survived her high school years (and married some guy named Pete Ross).  From the standpoint of the lore, Chloe never existed, and is thus a throwaway character -- a nicely built throwaway, to be sure.  So it don't look good for her....

But also be aware that in some man-of-steel lore, Jonathan Kent dies before Clark graduates.  I love John Schneider (in a totally manly, male-bonding, heterosexual way, of course) and they BETTER not kill him off.  But that might be the unexpected twist, since everybody KNOWS it must be Chloe.

Amen. by Fox

My day cannot begin or end without reading Sluggy.

And for those of you who are curious and might want to read it:  the strip will make absolutely no sense to you if you just pick it up.

You must read it from the VERY BEGINNING to truly understand and appreciate the genius of Pete Abrams (the author).

Besides, how could you not come to know Oasis, Sasha, Aylee, Horribus and the gang down in the Dimension of Pain, and the terror that is KITTEN?
