US Senate: calling South Dakota, calling Florida

In South Dakota, John Thune's lead continues to expand, and there's no reason to assume that the remaining precincts will yield a change of status. Let Red State be the first to declare the leader of the Senate Democrats soundly deposed: and welcome Red State endorsee John Thune to the United States Senate.

Red State candidates are sweeping, readers. Your dollars -- your pennies -- worked. And how. This is your victory, so savor it.

In balmy Florida, we're calling (barely) a Martinez victory over Democrat Betty Castor. Castor may demand a recount, so watch this one. But for now, we can rack up another win.

The legislative branch is safe. Now, on to the big prize.

Update [2004-11-3 0:59:49 by Thomas]: Word I'm hearing is that Castor will definitely demand a recount. This, incidentally, is why I hate Florida Democrats. This one isn't necessarily over yet, folks.

Update [2004-11-3 1:12:16 by Thomas]: Now Martinez is declaring victory, and not all that humbly either. Sheesh. Have I ever been more put off by the guy I'm rooting for?

Could be worse. It could be Kerry.

Update [2004-11-3 1:18:17 by Thomas]: Man, lawyers are being hired and primed on all sides. Get ready, kids.

Update [2004-11-3 1:22:30 by Thomas]: I am witness to the stupidest campaign between stupid candidates in American history. Castor is swearing a legal battle (according to her camp, "because Martinez hired lawyers first," I kid you not), and has been claiming a 100,000+ lead all night, when the lead never strayed close to that much for her.

So, question for commenters: Who's dumber, Castor or Martinez? Please disregard party affiliation in voting.

Update [2004-11-3 11:32:37 by Thomas]: Castor just conceded. Color me amazed.

I voted for a primary challenger to Martinez.  I have always thought he was inept.  So bad in fact as to have been let go as HUD Sec.

Caster...need I say anything?

Very optimistic here. Of course there will be legal challenges, but this race is about to make me giddy.

Democrats are Sore Losers by ConfigSysboy

The Democratic Party has proven once more that they are anything but gracious in defeat.  It's always someone else, some conspiracy, or dirty trick, or unfair this-or-that which is to blame, and never the leadership or the ideas of the people in question.  Kerry, Daschle and Castor should be ashamed of themselves, and the moderates in their own party should be calling them to task for dragging the party through the mud one more time.

The recriminations and infighting next year are not going to be pretty.

Much Better by ConfigSysboy

It would appear, thankfully, that I stand corrected.  The leadership of the DNC appears to be coming to grips with the magnitude of their defeat (when compiled with eight years worth of prior defeats this latest loss looks very much like a knock-out blow) and would rather loose with honor in hopes of living to fight another day.  I commend them for their realism and wish them luck in pulling their party back to the center.  Heaven knows they've got quite a fight on their hands with the angry left wing of their party.
